"TIME FOR FOOTBALL"
Week 4
Games of October 21, 1956
First shown on this DVD are highlights of the 4th week of the 1956 season. "Time For Football", shows highlights from all six games of Sunday October 21, 1956 as Jim Leaming describes the action (players in parentheses are shown in close-ups):
- Bears vs Baltimore Colts at Wrigley Field, Chicago - (Rick Casares, Harlon Hill)
Casares and Hill each score two TD's as Bears swamp Colts 58-27. A Casares TD run
and two Ed Brown to Hill TD passes have the Bears in front 20-14 at halftime (George
Blanda's streak of 156 consecutive PAT's is broken). Rookie Lenny Moore and Alan
Ameche have first half TD's for Colts, and rookie Johnny Unitas' first career NFL
pass is intercepted! Carl Taseff's 96-yd return of a missed FG attempt makes it
21-20 Colts early third quarter, then Bears take charge with four consecutive scores
before young rookie Johnny Unitas throws TD pass to Jim Mutscheller for final points
of the day.
- Chicago Cardinals vs Eagles at Connie Mack Stadium - Two Pat Summerall FG's and TD's
by Gern Nagler and Johnny Olszewski lead Cardinals to 20-6 victory over Eagles. All six
Philadelphia points are scored on two FG's by Bobby Walston.
- Packers vs Rams at County Stadium, Milwaukee - (Tobin Rote, Billy Wade, Elroy Hirsch)
Billy Howton has 7 receptions for 257 yards on the day and breaks Don Hutson's receiving
record, as Green Bay beats Rams 42-17! Howton and Gary Knafelc score two TD's each for
Packers in lopsided win. Leon Clarke and Tank Younger score for Rams.
- Redskins vs Browns at Griffith Stadium, Washington - (Eddie LeBaron,
Leo Elter and George Ratterman) Lou Groza's three FG's have Cleveland up 9-7 at the half,
but Browns are blanked in second half, while LeBaron to Dick James TD pass and Sam Baker's
two FG's make final score 20-9 for Washington!
- Giants vs Steelers at Yankee Stadium - Giants play first game ever in their new home and
rout Pittsburgh 38-10! Two Conerly TD passes and touchdowns by Frank Gifford, Kyle Rote and
Gene Filipski seal Giant's 38-10 victory!
- Lions vs 49'ers at Briggs Stadium, Detroit - (Hopalong Cassady and Don McIlhenny) Bobby Layne's
two FG's, including the game-winner with just 17 seconds left, lifts Lions to 20-17 win over 49'ers in
action-packed see-saw game! Detroit rookie Don McIlhenny is outstanding with clutch running and first
half TD. John Johnson runs for two San Francisco TD's.
