ALL-STAR GAME TRIPLE-HEADER
(1948, 1952, 1955)
Here's RARE SPORTSFILMS baseball footage at it's nostalgic best! Highlights of three different All-Star Games (1948, 1952, 1955) all on one video, a total of 35 minutes of historic baseball action!
"The All-Star Game of 1948" at old Sportsman's Park in St. Louis features homers by Stan Musial off A.L. starting pitcher Walt Masterson of the Senators in the very first inning, and Hoot Evers of the Tigers off N.L. starter Ralph Branca in the second. However, Yankee pitcher Vic Raschi gets the big hit of the game in the fourth, a one-out bases loaded single off Johnny Schmitz of the Cubs. Joe DiMaggio's long fly then drives in another, as the A.L. wins, 5-2. Other players shown are: Walker Cooper, Richie Ashburn, Johnny Mize, Lou Boudreau, Mickey Vernon, Pat Mullin, Enos Slaughter, Ken Keltner, George McQuinn, Andy Pafko, Johnny Sain, Vern Stephens, Buddy Kerr, Eddie Waitkus, Ted Williams and Al Zarilla.
The 1952 game at Shibe Park, Philadelphia was the first all-star game to be cut short by rain, which halted play after five innings with the N.L. leading, 3-2. In the first inning Jackie Robinson smacks a Vic Raschi pitch for a homer, his first in all-star play. Hank Sauer later unloads a two-run blast off Bob Lemon in the fourth to provide the victory margin. However, Philadelphia pitchers Curt Simmons of the Phils and Bobby Shantz of the A's (having his finest season) steal the show. Simmons blanks the A.L. on two hits over the first three innings, and Shantz strikes out Whitey Lockman, Robinson and Stan Musial in succession in the fifth. The rain deprives him of a chance to equal Carl Hubbell's record of five in a row set in the 1934 game. Both N.L. runs are scored in the fourth off the Cub's Bob Rush. After Minnie Minoso's pinch double, a walk and an out, Eddie Robinson singles for one run, and another scores when Bobby Avila beats out a hit. Other players shown: Hank Bauer, Mickey Mantle, Dom DiMaggio and mgr. Casey Stengel.
Most of this video however, covers the 1955 mid-summer classic at County Stadium, Milwaukee - a game many still talk about! In addition to the original game highlights, a special pre-game look at the players chosen for the game has been added. This special part gives a rundown on County Stadium, with close-ups on rival managers Leo Durocher and Al Lopez plus players Ted Kluszewski, Red Schoendienst, Yogi Berra, Eddie Mathews, Whitey Lockman, Richie Ashburn, Don Mueller, Ernie Banks, Mickey Vernon, Nellie Fox, Harvey Kuenn, Chico Carrasquel, Jim Finigan, Stan Lopata, Mickey Mantle, Al Kaline and Ted Williams. The game itself is a thriller, lasting 12 innings before Stan Musial homers on the first pitch from Boston's Frank Sullivan in the bottom of the 12th! The homer caps an uphill National League battle, in which the Senior Circuit trailed early 5-0. N.L. starter Robin Roberts gives up the first run in the first inning on a wild pitch, before Mickey Mantle smashes a 430-foot homer later in the same inning. Behind 5-0 after six, the N.L. begins its comeback in the seventh off Whitey Ford. Singles by Willie Mays and Johnny Logan get two runs and one inning later safeties by Mays, Kluszewski, Hank Aaron and Randy Jackson figure in three more runs, tying the game. The partisan Milwaukee crowd of 45,643 gives the Brave hurler Gene Conley a standing ovation for his pitching in the top of the final inning. "Long Gene" strikes out Kaline, Vernon and Al Rosen in succession! This sets the stage for Musial's heroics in the last of the inning, which win the game, 6-5.
