GRAND NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Here it is! A video on Grand National Stock Car Racing showing those tremendously popular "muscle cars" of the 1969-1970 era on the tracks and in competition with some of the greatest drivers of over 30 years ago! Watch the sleek Dodge Daytonas and Plymouth Superbirds with drivers such as Bobby Allison, "Chargin" Charlie Glotzbach, Cale Yarborough, Dr. Don Tarr, Scotty Cain, Mel Larson, Jack McCoy, James Hylton, Lee Roy Yarbrough, Dan Gurney, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Elmo Langley, Sam Posey, Dave Alonzo, David Marcis, Pete Hamilton, and of course Richard Petty and Grand National Points Champion Bobby Isaac!
This beautiful 28-minute full-color video shows 1970 action in four races at Riverside, Michigan and Charlotte Motor Speedway. The video opens with Grand National action, then with a fast-paced stretch of 18 consecutive spins and crashes in a row! Also shown is pit action. Here's a summary of what you'll see on this exciting tape:
January 18 at Riverside Road Course - Dan Gurney's purple #42 Petty Enterprises Superbird starts on the pole, but gets passed on the very first lap and never leads the race, although Gurney does finish 6th. Starting at the rear because of a tire penalty, Parnelli Jones charges up thru the pack to run second during the early stages of the "Motor Trend 500", but in the end, A.J. Foyt in his #11 white Jack Bowsher Ford takes the checkered flag in a race marked by spins. In fact, Dave Alonzo spins three different times, but he's not the only one! Caught by the color cameras in spins during the race are Dave Marcis in his #30 Superbird, Elmo Langley in his green #64 '68 Ford and others. Bobby Allison and Sam Posey are both shown driving off the course, and Posey later hits the wall in turn six. Richard Petty, who leads for awhile, also spins in the tricky turn 6.
June 7 at Michigan International Speedway - Nice closeups before the race of Lee Roy Yarbrough, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty and Bobby Isaac. Pit action during the race shows Cale, Isaac, and Charlie Glotzbach. Richard Petty's race ends when he stalls his car in the pits and his ignition fails. Shown is Glotzbach's fiery spin while leading the race! At the end, it's Yarborough and Pete Hamilton fighting it out, with Cale nudging by going into turn 3. Great shots of Cale in victory lane after winning the "Motor State 400"!
June 14 at Riverside Road Course - One week later Richard Petty, in his blue Petty Enterprises Superbird, leads all but four laps and breezes to victory in the "Falstaff 400" at Riverside. Bobby Allison, in his Mario Rossi '69 Dodge Daytona starts on the pole, but his spinout on the very first lap forces him to play catchup for most of the race. Bobby actually goes into the lead when Petty pits, but his #22 just doesn't have the muscle to pass Petty, and Bobby finishes second. Don Tarr and Scotty Cain are shown spinning in turn eight and Mel Larson and Jack McCoy are seen sliding around in turn six.
October 11 at Charlotte Motor Speedway - Before the race, you'll see more outstanding shots of Yarborough, John Sears, Fred Lorenzen, Buddy Baker, Glotzbach, Pearson, Isaac, Allison and Petty before the race. Glotzbach in the #99 Dodge Daytona starts on the pole for the "National 500", but after only 44 Laps he crashes. After being as much as two laps behind, Bobby Isaac catches and passes Lee Roy Yarbrough with just 14 laps to go, but just then his engine blows and he must settle for 5th. Lee Roy Yarbrough comes through to win, as the race ends under caution. Afterward, in a live interview, Isaac comments on the race.
Next, you'll sit in on the NASCAR Championship Banquet, as 1970 Points Champion Bobby Isaac receives his Championship trophy and a check for $25,000 from Falstaff, for winning what is now known as the Winston Cup Championship! The tape ends with coverage of the event, with Isaac making his acceptance speech and posing with "Miss Falstaff"!
