"The Baltimore Orioles In Action"

Here’s the color and excitement of Baltimore Oriole baseball action of the early 1960’s at its very best --- a new video of the 1962 team in spring training, at home and on the road is now available from RARE SPORTSFILMS! Titled "The Baltimore Orioles In Action" and narrated by long-time voice of the Orioles Chuck Thompson, this film contains the oldest COLOR footage that exists of Brooks Robinson and young rookie John "Boog" Powell!

The tape begins with a look at the Oriole’s minor league camp at Thomasville, Georgia, and shows youngsters such as Larry Haney receiving teaching from instructors Ray Scarborough, Barney Lutz, George Staller and Oriole third base coach Billy Hunter. You’ll see Earl Weaver swatting grounders in his pre-managerial days.

The color cameras will take you to famed Miami Stadium, for years the annual spring home of the Orioles, and you’ll see the major league Orioles as they prepare for the upcoming season under new manager Billy Hitchcock. Part of the action is live-miked and you’ll actually hear Hitchcock give advice and encouragement to young Brooks Robinson in the batting cage as he smacks out line drives. Listen in on pitching coach Harry Brecheen as he gives tips and instruction to two rookie pitchers, Dave McNally and John Miller, neither of whom had yet appeared in a major league game! Throughout the film, you’ll see many other players of the ’62 team: pitchers Darold Knowles, Wes Stock, and Robin Roberts, infielders Robinson, Jerry Adair, Ron Hansen and slugging first sacker Jim Gentile, outfielders Russ Snyder, Jackie Brandt, Earl Robinson and Whitey Herzog and catcher Gus Triandos.

But the most interesting part of all may be the game-action footage from games in 1962. Covered is Opening Day at Yankee Stadium, Billy Hoeft vs. Whitey Ford. Second baseman Johnny Temple hits the first Oriole homer of the season, but Moose Skowron is shown legging out a rare inside-the-park homer of his own! Great shots of Mickey Mantle playing the outfield are also thrilling. Then, it’s on to Baltimore for the home opener at Memorial Stadium against the Red Sox, Chuck Estrada vs. Gene Conley. Fittingly enough, Brooks Robinson hits the first Oriole homer of the home season, and rookie outfielder John Powell is shown getting his first career hit in Memorial Stadium. Throughout the tape, other American League stars are shown in action: Frank Lary, Rocky Colavito and Al Kaline of the Tigers, Pedro Ramos, Willie Kirkland and Barry Latman of the Indians, catcher Camilo Carreon of the White Sox, Carl Yastrzemski and Frank Malzone of the Red Sox, and Ford, Mantle and Roger Maris of the New York Yankees.
