MILWAUKEE BRAVES
"The Best Of Baseball"

"BRAVES FINISH SECOND TO PIRATES IN 1960!" This 1960 Milwaukee Braves nostalgic video is another in a continuing series of Braves promotional films now being restored and offered by RARE SPORTSFILMS! "The Best Of Baseball" highlights the 1960 season of the Milwaukee Braves, a season in which they finished second to the World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates get ample exposure in the film, as the Braves host the future champs at County Stadium on Opening Day. You'll see all the highlights of the 1960 lidlifter, a close game won by Milwaukee in the late innings. Throughout the game you'll see action shots of players on both clubs: starting pitchers Warren Spahn and Bob Friend, Roberto Clemente, Gino Cimoli, Dick Groat, Bob Skinner, Hal Smith, Rocky Nelson, Eddie Mathews, Red Schoendienst, Del Crandall, rookie Al Spangler and new manager Chuck Dressen. Spahn, who hits a homer, carries a 2-0 shutout into the 7th, but two Buc runs tie the game and bring on fireballer Don McMahon. A long home run by Joe Adcock following a single by Hank Aaron puts the Braves back in front 4-2 vs. reliever Elroy Face.

Throughout the tape, you'll see all the well-known Braves of the day: Wes Covington, Mathews and Aaron, Adcock, Billy Bruton, Braves ERA leader Bob Buhl, Lew Burdette, pitching coach Whitlow Wyatt, Schoendienst and running mate Johnny Logan, etc. Also included are many great closeup and action shots of other stars of the National League such as Don Newcombe, Gus Bell, Vada Pinson, Jim Brosnan and Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds, Willie Mays and rookie Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants, Stan Musial, George Crowe, Lindy McDaniel and 21-game winner Ernie Broglio of the St. Louis Cardinals, Stan Williams, Norm Larker and Don Demeter of the L.A. Dodgers, Ernie Banks, Richie Ashburn and Don Cardwell of the Chicago Cubs and Robin Roberts of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Included in this tape are highlights of the first Braves Old Timers Day held on July 9. Shown are former Braves and Brewers Nelson Potter, Jack Dittmer, Eddie Stanky, Alvin Dark, Ken Keltner and Joe Hauser, who hit 69 home runs for the Minneapolis Millers in 1933!

Another segment shows close plays and humorous incidents which happened during Braves games throughout the 1960 season. Follow the bouncing ball as it takes strange hops and weird and wacky plays of baseball, 1960!

Not only did the Pirates open the Braves season at Milwaukee, they also close the Braves home season by clinching the pennant in the final home game of the year at County Stadium. Before the game, color cameras catch many of the Pirates in nice, closeup shots: 20-game winner Vern Law, Vinegar Bend Mizell, Bill Virdon, Dick Stuart, Don Hoak and Bill Mazeroski. The hometown crowd leaves happy, as Eddie Mathews' extra-inning homer wins the game for Milwaukee while in Chicago, a Cub victory over St. Louis clinches the pennant for the Pirates.
