MILWAUKEE BRAVES
"BRAVES TIE DODGERS FOR PENNANT IN '59!"

Another nostalgic chapter in Milwaukee Braves history unfolds on video in another of a continuing series of Braves COLOR highlight films now available on home video! "The Fighting Braves of '59" highlights the Braves' 1959 season, both at home and on the road as they tie the Dodgers for the pennant on the last day of the regular season. Also included are highlights of both games of the N.L. Pennant Playoff vs Los Angeles.

This video opens with the final game of the regular season against the Phils at County Stadium. With the Dodgers beating the Cubs, the Braves score a run off Phillies starter Jim Owens in the 4th inning to lead 1-0. Carl Sawatski's HR off Bob Buhl ties the game an inning later, but the Braves' 3-run 7th clinches the game. The N.L. Race ends in a tie!

The tape then digresses back to spring training in Bradenton, Florida with the Braves preparing to defend their second straight pennant. Because Red Schoendienst is out for the season with tuberculosis, the Braves are looking for second base help. Shown are candidates Casey Wise, Chuck Cottier, Felix Mantilla, and Joe Koppe. Other scenes of spring training show Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews each taking their turns in the batting cage.

The Braves open the season at historic Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Warren Spahn vs. Bob Friend. Eddie Mathews' HR in the 6th following Billy Bruton's lead-off single gives the Braves a 2-0 lead. Milwaukee scores more runs in the 7th and Spahn coasts to a nifty 8-0 shutout win to get the season underway. This segment of the tape contains many fantastic shots of old Forbes Field from many unusual angles.

Throughout the video you'll see great close-ups of many of the Braves including Aaron, Mathews, Spahn, and Lou Burdette plus shots of opposing players of '59, including El Roy Face and Harvey Haddix of the Pirates, Ken Boyer Joe Cunningham, Vinegar Bend Mizell, and Stan Musial of the Cardinals, Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese, Charlie Neal, Wally Moon and Don Drysdale of the Dodgers, and Sad Sam Jones, Johnny Antonelli, Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda and 1959 Rookie Of The Year, Willie McCovey of the Giants.

On his tape you'll follow the Braves to pint-sized Seals Stadium in San Francisco and see action scenes in this long-gone ballpark. New Candlestick Park is also shown being built.

The video culminates with coverage of the 1959 N.L. Pennant playoffs. In game 1 at Milwaukee, Johnny Roseboro's HR snaps a 2-2 tie in the 6th and provides Los Angeles with the winning margin as the Bums win a tight game in the Monday afternoon gloom at County Stadium. At the Coliseum the next day the Braves score two first-inning runs off Don Drysdale. Later, Eddie Mathews' 46th homer of the year gives him the '59 N.L. homer crown and Milwaukee a 4-2 lead. The pivotal play of the game is also shown, as baserunner Norm Larker bowls over shortstop Johnny Logan, knocking him out of the game. Mantilla, his replacement, is shown making the throwing error in the 12th inning which allows Gil Hodges to score from second with the winning run to clinch Los Angeles' first pennant.
