SAN FRANCISCO 49'ERS

Now on DVD is the 1959 49'ers Highlight Film, narrated by voice of the 49'ers Bob Fouts and presented by Falstaff beer with the original cartoon commercial featuring "The Old Pro". Under new head coach Red Hickey, a revitalized offense and rebuilt defense got the club off to a 6-1 start, as J.D. Smith, the new starting halfback, put in strong performances each week. Abe Woodson, Jerry Mertens, and rookies Eddie Dove and Dave Baker shut off enemy passing attacks over the first half of the season. However, the high-flying 49'ers took a nose dive in the final month and lost four of their last five games. Five games are shown here (see below) on the original team highlight film of the 1959 '49'ers. At the end, nice close-up shots of many of the players are shown, including Y.A. Tittle, Matt Hazeltine, young John Bodie, Charlie Krueger, Leo Nomellini, J.D. Smith, Hugh McElhenny and Joe Perry, as well as many others shown in action throughout the film, such as Lenny Lyles, R.C. Owens, Clyde Conner, Bruce Bosley, Abe Woodson, Billy Wilson, John Thomas, Ed Henke, John Gonzaga, Jerry Tubbs, Henry Schmidt, Bob St. Clair, Ted Connolly, Frank Morze, Johnny Wittenborn, Karl Rubke, and rookie kicker Tommy Davis.

Here are the games shown, in order:
Sun. Oct. 18 - '49'ers 34, Lions 13 at Briggs Stadiun, Detroit.
Sun. Oct. 25 - '49'ers 20, Bears 17 at Kezar Stadium, San Francisco.
Sun. Nov. 8 - '49'ers 24, Rams 16 at The Coliseum, Los Angeles.
Sun. Nov. 29 - '49'ers 21, Browns 20 at Municipal Stadium, Cleveland.

"TIME FOR FOOTBALL"

Week 8

Games of November 15, 1959

"Time For Football", shows highlights from all six games of Sunday November 15, 1959 as Jim Leaming describes the action:

  • Browns at Griffith Stadium - Bobby Mitchell scores three TD's for Browns while gaining 232 yards (just five yds short of Jim Brown's single game record) as Cleveland defeats Redskins 31-17. Dick James and Johnny Olszewski both score for Washington.
  • Lions vs Rams at Briggs Stadium - Dave Middleton, Ollie Matson and John Henry Johnson score touchdowns to help beat L.A. Rams 23-17, as Jim Martin also boots two FG's. Frank Ryan’s 4th period 67-yd TD pass to Del Shofner is too little too late for Rams.
  • Steelers at Yankee Stadium - Bobby Layne's 45-yd TD pass to Tom Tracy with just seconds left gives Pittsburgh thrilling 14-9 comeback victory over Giants! Pat Summerall's three FG's are the only New York scores.
  • Eagles vs Chicago Cardinals at Franklin Field - Clarence Peaks' 4th quarter 3-yd TD run puts Philadelphia ahead to stay in see-saw game. Pete Retzlaff and Billy Barnes also score for Eagles during winning effort, while King Hill's 32-yd TD pass to Ken Hall and a blocked punt return by Mal Hammack add 14 points for Cardinals.
  • Baltimore Colts at County Stadium - Colts face "must win" game vs Packers and game is thrilling but disappointing for Packer backers. A Johnny Unitas second-quarter scoring toss to Raymond Berry now gives him a TD pass in 33 consecutive games! Additional TD passes from Unitas to Berry and the winning score to Jim Mutscheller bring Colts tough win over Packers. Jim Taylor's three touchdowns for Green Bay are not enough to beat Colts.
  • Bears vs 49'ers at Wrigley Field - In low-scoring game with five Chicago inceptions, Bears beat San Francisco 14-3. Rick Casares' 2-yd TD plunge caps opening drive and gives Chicago 7-0 lead before 49'er offense even makes an appearance! Rookie kicker Tommy Davis furnishes only Prospector points with 42-yd second quarter FG for 7-3 halftime score. An Ed Brown screen pass is hauled in by Johnny Morris and turned into a 51-yd TD run to give 11-point lead which eventually holds up in 14-3 Bear victory.
