1957 - 58 Los Angeles RAMS highlights

1957 and 1958

LOS ANGELES RAMS

With Norm Van Brocklin and Billy Wade both at quarterback in '57, the Rams were in somewhat of a rebuilding year. Second year men Tom Wilson and Joe Marconi with veteran Tank Younger were the top runners. For 1958, coach Sid Gillman made three changes which jazzed up the Ram offense and made the team more exciting to watch: he traded veteran QB Norm Van Brocklin to the Eagles, installing young Billy Wade as his full-time QB, he put Jon Arnett into the starting backfield, and shifted Del Shofner from defense to offense. Now starting in addition to his kick-return duties, Arnett emerged as a top NFL star with his jackrabbit quickness, using his speed and moves best on end runs and on screen passes. Shofner proved a worthy successor to the retired Crazy Legs Hirsch, becoming one of the NFL's best deep receiving threats.

In these two historic highlight films, you'll see all the Rams of the 1957 and 1958 teams - nice close-ups of coach Sid Gillman, Les Richter, Will Sherman, Dick Daugherty, Leon Clarke, Joe Marconi, Don Burroughs, Bob Fry, Frank Fuller, Tom Wilson, Duane Putnam, Billy Wade, Del Shofner, George Struger, Ken Panfil, Lou Michaels and Buck Lansford. Other Rams shown in action are Paige Cothren, Tank Younger, Bob Boyd, Ron Waller, Jesse Whittenton, Crazy Legs Hirsch, Glenn Holtzman, Lamar Lundy, John Houser, Bob Griffin, Jack Pardee, Larry Morris and 1958 newcomers Clendon Thomas, Charlie Bradshaw, Jimmy Harris, John Morrow, Jim Jones, Red Phillips, John Baker and young QB Frank Ryan. Narrated by voice of the Rams Bob Kelly, the films also contain original Falstaff Beer commercials featuring "The Old Pro" and his huge sidekick "Ellwood".
