NEW YORK YANKEES
"Winning With The Yankees"
New York Yankee fans and baseball historians alike will thrill to another vintage full-color video from Rare Sportsfilms! Narrated by the famous long-time voice of the Yankees Mel Allen, the official 1956 Yankee film "Winning With The Yankees" contains not only a look at the 1956 team in action, but beautiful color scenes of the 1956 World Series! See old Yankee Stadium as it looked 50 years ago and both close up and action shots of the players of the '56 club, including Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Bill Skowron, Gil McDougald, Jerry Coleman, Bob Turley, Joe Collins Tommy Byrne, Hank Bauer, Phil Rizzuto, Elston Howard and many others.
In spring training at St. Petersburg, manager Casey Stengel is shown along with Yankee coaches Frank Crosetti, Jim Turner and Bill Dickey teaching baseball fundamentals. You'll be behind the scenes as color cameras take you inside Yankee Stadium for a look at the front office with George Weiss, Bill DeWitt and Lee McPhail at work, plus a look inside the Yankee clubhouse, including Stengel's office. Shown are the five monuments in center field and flashbacks of the great Yankees of the past, including Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. The emphasis is on the great Yankee winning tradition as brief highlights of Yankee World Series wins of 1949 through 1953 are shown in black & white. Some rare clips of Joe DiMaggio Day at the Stadium in 1949 are also included as well as Stengel hoisting the 1953 World Championship flag on Opening Day, 1954.
The Yankees invented Old Timers Day and color close up shots show some of the greatest players in baseball history back for another reunion in 1955-1956: Al Simmons, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochran, Lefty Grove, Bill Terry, Frankie Frisch, Charlie Gehringer, Paul Waner, "Home Run Baker", Ray Schalk, Joe DiMaggio, Gabby Hartnett, Bill Dickey, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Joe McCarthy, Red Rolph, Charlie Keller, Red Ruffing and lefty Gomez. You'll see stars on other teams as well, as the Tigers, Indians, Athletics and White Sox furnish opposition for the Yankees during the regular season. Toward the end of the video is shown the pennant-clinching game of the '56 season at Fenway Park, as Whitey Ford nails down a 3-2 win over the Red Sox under the lights.
Full color highlights of the 1956 World Series, games three through seven climax the video: Enos Slaughter's three-run homer in game 3, and Mantle and Bauer both shown blasting out round trippers the next day in game 4 as Tom Sturdivant 6-hits Brooklyn at the Stadium. In never-to-be-forgotten game 5, Don Larsen is shown during his perfect game and Mantle's winning homer is shown. Action resumes at Ebbets Field in game 6 as Turley and Clem Labine duel in a scoreless game for nine innings before Brooklyn wins in ten. All the highlights from game 7 are shown: Berra's homer to start the romp off Dodger starter Don Newcombe, Howard's blast in the fourth inning, and finally Bill Skowron's grand slam that wrapped up the series. The jubilant Yankees are shown in the visiting Ebbets Field clubhouse: Berra, Ford, Larsen, Turley, 7th game winning pitcher Johnny Kucks, Casey Stengel with reporters and Bill Skowron with his foot long cigar! This is vintage COLOR footage of Yankee Stadium and this rare film of the 1956 team is truly a must for all Yankee fans!
