NEW YORK YANKEES
"GAME-OF-THE-WEEK"
(September 22, 1954)
vs
WASHINGTON SENATORS
For the first time ever, an entire major league game from as far back as 1954 is now available to all baseball fans on videotape! With the beautiful crystal-clear video picture that "Rare Sportsfilms" is known for, this black & white half-hour tape is a must for all Yankee and Senator fans who remember cheering for their heroes nearly five decades ago! The Yankee lineup of that day is well-known, but Washington followers will delight in seeing their favorites again also, challenging the Yankees at the most famous ballpark in baseball, OLD Yankee Stadium!
Rather than a play-by-play account of every pitch with live sound, this tape shows almost every play of the game and is narrated by one of the well-known sports voices of the day, Ed Thorgersen (remember, complete games on video prior to 1969 are not available). This is a typical Yankee "Game Of The Week", shown exactly as it was presented to fans in the New York area on the half-hour weekly TV show during the season.
This particular game features great close-up shots from behind home plate, some great views of Yogi Berra in the on-deck circle, a little known Senator named Roy Dietzel playing in one of the only nine major league games he ever appeared in, and most historic of all, the first triple play in Yankee Stadium history!
The triple play occurs in the Senator 6th after consecutive hits by Wayne Terwilliger and Pete Runnels. With both runners leading away, two-time A.L. Batting Champ Mickey Vernon smashes a liner high over the first base bag which rookie Bill Skowron (wearing his first uniform #53) leaps high to grab. Skowron then tags the bag retiring Runnels who is "hung out to dry" between first and second, and then finishes the play by pegging to Jerry Coleman at second, who tags "Twigs" sliding back in from the third base side! The play is re-run in stop motion.
More than any video ever made, this tape gives a real "feel" for what it was like watching Major League Baseball on TV in the mid-1950's!
