NEW YORK GIANTS
"Baseball Fundamentals & Techniques"
"Baseball Fundamentals & Techniques" is a B & W baseball instructional film featuring the New York Giants in spring training at Phoenix, Arizona in 1949. Narrated by radio voice of the Giants Russ Hodges with an introduction by Giants manager Leo Durocher, the film shows members of the '49 Giants demonstrating how they play their positions, as well as team defense and offense: baserunning, sliding, bunting and hitting. This long-lost film is now available on DVD for the first time ever, thanks to the restoration expertise of Rare Sportsfilms, Inc.
This 44-minute DVD opens showing the Giants playing at the old Polo Grounds and typical scenes at the park of fans, pre-game warmups, etc. Most of the rest of the film takes place at the Giants' spring training home in Phoenix. Here are the aspects of defensive baseball, with the corresponding players shown demonstrating - Pitching: Larry Jansen, Catching: Wes Westrum, Mickey Livingston and Sal Yvars, First Base: Johnny Mize, Second Base/Shortstop: Bobby Hofman, Buddy Kerr and Bill Rigney, Third Base: Sid Gordon, Outfield: Bobby Thomson, Willard Marshall and Whitey Lockman. Lots of attention is given to team defense: relay throws, cutoffs and backing up throws. The four aspects of offensive baseball, Baserunning, Sliding, Bunting and Hitting are then shown. Baserunning and sliding involve Bobby Thomson, Bill Rigney and Bobby Rhawn. Bunting is demonstrated by Bill Rigney and Whitey Lockman. Finally, showing good batting form are Don Mueller, Walker Cooper, Bobby Thomson, Whitey Lockman, Willard Marshall, Sid Gordon and Johnny Mize. Other Giants shown in the film are Joe Lafata, coach Red Kress and manager Durocher.
