Baseball history comes to life for Cardinal and St. Louis Browns fans on this video of the 1944 all-St. Louis World Series, plus an exclusive 1953 interview with Browns pitcher Bobo Holloman shortly after his famous no-hitter! This 30-minute tape, narrated by long-time broadcaster Bob Elson, shows the Cardinals and Browns as they appeared over half a century ago! With a special introduction by Connie Mack, this video contains all the highlights of every game of the 1944 series, won by the Cardinals four games to two. Also covered is the pre-game excitement before the opener, with great shots of managers Billy Southworth and Luke Sewell, as well as closeups of each member of the starting lineups for both teams!
Game 1 - Denny Galehouse vs Mort Cooper - The Cardinals take the field in their home white uniforms with 22-game winner Mort Cooper pitching an outstanding 2-hitter, but losing, 2-1! Those two hits are bunched in the 4th, when Gene Moore singles and George McQuinn, batting behind him, smacks what is to prove to be the only World Series home run in St. Louis Browns history! Galehouse pitches well himself, going all the way and giving up only a single run in the ninth inning!
Game 2 - Nelson Potter vs Max Lanier - The Cards even the series, but it takes 11 innings to do it! Both starters pitch well, but neither gets a decision. Blix Donnelly pitches four outstanding innings in relief of Lanier and comes up with the win. In the 11th, Ray Sanders gets things going for the Cardinals with a single. Then a sacrifice and base hit by pinch hitter Ken O'Dea punches over the winning run as the Redbirds win, 3-2.
Game 3 - Ted Wilks vs Jack Kramer - The teams change dugouts for the third game and the Browns bounce back 6-2 as Kramer strikes out 10 and McQuinn (the eventual batting star for the Browns with .438) goes 3 for 3.
Game 4 - Harry Brecheen vs Sig Jakucki - Stan Musial's 2-run homer in the first inning is the big blow and furnishes all the runs Brecheen needs for a complete game 5-1 victory, as the Cardinals again tie the series!
Game 5 - Mort Cooper vs Denny Galehouse - Game one winner Galehouse pitches well again, giving the Cardinals only six hits, but two of these are solo homers by Ray Sanders and Danny Litwhiler. Mort Cooper makes these runs stand up and tosses a 7-hit shutout, blanking the Browns, 2-0.
Game 6 - Nelson Potter vs Max Lanier - Although the Browns jump ahead with a run in the second inning, another Brownie error (they make 10 in the series) leads to a Cardinal 3-run fourth and enables Lanier to clinch the series with a 3-1 win. The series was becoming 'old hat' to the Cardinals, who were appearing in their 8th in the last 19 years, but for the cross-town Browns, it was the only appearance in their 52-year history!
Also on this tape is a rare, never-before-seen live interview with Browns righthander Bobo Holloman, who became the only player to pitch a no-hitter in his first major league start on May 6, 1953! The interview takes place on the sidelines during Browns batting practice at old Sportsman's Park, St. Louis.
